MUHAMMAD UNIVERSITY OF ISLAM was Established in 1931, by Messenger Elijah Muhammad (peace be upon him), in Detroit, MI.  It began as an elementary school wherein The Messenger's wife, and other Muslim mothers, removed their children from public schools to "TEACH THEIR OWN". which taught "mathematics, astronomy and the general knowledge of civilization." By 1974 there were 47 University of Islam schools across the country.
